Description
This stunning 19th century coloured lithograph captures a crucial historical moment: the departure of Christopher Columbus from the port of Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) on 3 August 1492, in search of a new world.
After years of struggling to make his dream come true, Columbus finally got the necessary support and personally supervised the assembly of three ships: the Santa María, the Pinta and the Niña. However, the voyage was not without its difficulties, as many sailors were reluctant to embark on an expedition they considered madness.
The day of departure was marked by scenes of deep emotion. Wives, mothers and girlfriends of the sailors burst into tears, fearing they would never see their loved ones again. Cries of despair echoed in the harbour as the sails were hoisted and the fleet set sail for the unknown.
This lithograph, with its vibrant colours and detailed composition, is an exceptional piece that evokes the courage, uncertainty and significance of that historic voyage that would change the course of humanity. A must-have for collectors and history buffs alike.
