18th Century Basque Canopy Bed

Exceptional Product

An extraordinary 18th-century Basque canopy bed from a farmhouse, crafted in polychrome pine wood.

This piece is a rarity, as traditional Basque carpentry of the era is typically very austere.

What makes it extraordinary is that it retains all its original elements, including the canopy, headboard, footboard, and side rails.

The wood is painted in a reddish-orange hue over stucco, with geometric and figurative motifs primarily located on the headboard and canopy. Both feature a central rosette in vibrant colors: white, yellow, green, brown, red, and black.

Today, very few complete beds like this remain intact.

One of these beds was featured on the cover of House & Garden magazine.

The headboard is carved in a semicircular arch shape, while the rectangular footboard is assembled with the bedposts, which rise to support the canopy at about two meters in height. The various parts of the bed are constructed with tongue-and-groove boards, reinforced with rear crossbars.

Some examples of these beds were acquired by the Basque Museum in Bilbao during the 1980s.
