Description
This magnificent 19th century coloured lithograph depicts the glorious return of Christopher Columbus to Spain after his historic voyage to the New World.
After discovering and taking possession of several islands on behalf of the Catholic Monarchs, Columbus set out on his return journey, bringing with him not only tales of exotic lands and unknown riches, but also several natives who retained the costumes of their homeland, arousing the fascination of the Spanish court.
His arrival was a real triumph. Ferdinand and Isabella received him with great honours, recognising the magnitude of his feat. In an unprecedented show of favour, they allowed him to sit and drape himself in their presence, a privilege reserved only for the great men of Spain. In addition, they confirmed and extended his titles, again granting him recognition as Grand Admiral and Viceroy of the New World, elevating him and all his descendants to the nobility.
It was not long before he was entrusted with a new mission. With the backing of the crown, Columbus set sail again for the lands he had just discovered, this time in command of an imposing fleet of 17 ships, with the task of consolidating settlements and continuing the expansion of his historic enterprise.
This lithograph captures in great detail the splendour and significance of that moment, reflecting the glory and recognition that Columbus gained for his courage and determination. A must-have for collectors and lovers of the history of the great explorations.
